Is vintage the new niche?

Oh nice! Who is wearing Molecule 01? That really is a wonderful scent!

There's nothing I hate more than when the perfume I'm wearing is recognized by everyone everywhere. Finally, about ten to 15 years ago there was the rise of the niche perfume houses. A whole new world of scents opened up to me and what I really enjoyed is that people asked me about my perfume all the time. At that time, niche houses were really niche or less known and therefore there was plenty of choice of perfumes that were not recognized by everyone.

No one could have imagined that a niche in perfumery would become so unprecedentedly popular, but it happened. As a result, people today are even more aware of the latest niche fragrances than of the latest Lancome. YouTube is full of reviewers who present one niche fragrance after another and in fact, well-known YouTubers such as Paulina Schar and Gabby Loves Perfumes are even hired by niche brands to make their own creations such as Navitus Dark Chocolate. And so it happened that any niche perfume given is now more likely to be recognized on the street than any designer perfume. I wonder if "niche" can actually be called niche nowadays.

In a world that is changing too quickly and is polluted, I notice that I am longing for things of the past. I am more interested in products with a story. Well, I've always been interested in that, but that feeling is growing stronger. I increasingly buy vintage items for the home, but also vintage clothing. When I look around me, I see that I am not the only one. It is a global trend to give products a second or third life. Not only to combat pollution, I am also truly convinced that people are also turning against this fast-paced world. People no longer want to be a mass, but unique, in whatever aspect.

And so, I  also see a huge increase of interest in my world of vintage scents. People become interested in vintage scents and look at them as they would at old art. Perfumes are not fragrances, but artistic creations of "noses", that is, artists. Now I must honestly say that almost no new perfume is a match for vintage fragrances in terms of composition. A new perfume usually has a much shorter shelf life, with some exceptions, simply because of the new and synthetic ingredients used today. A vintage bottle of perfume may have been made in 1975, but still be of explicit quality or even better today. And besides, I love it that people compliment you on your perfume and no one has a clue what scent it is, simply because it's no longer made...
